I absolutely love photography, but every photographer says that, don’t they? So, let me explain the reason behind my “why”.
For me, it’s got a lot to do with my health. I’ve always been interested in photographs, capturing a moment in time, whether it is purely for art, or because it has a hidden meaning behind it. It’s always been a hobby and passion of mine, but, I never considered it would become a career choice.
I spent many years working as a chef in the Navy, and then in sales roles, until I was struck down with M.E. For five years I was practically bed-bound, and when I wasn't, I found photography to be a great release. In fact, it essentially became my life saver. For those five years I read everything I could get my hands on, watched countless video's, and experimented with my own equipment to hone my technical skills, consuming everything I could about the topic.
It kept me occupied, and most importantly, kept me sane by ensuring I had a focus and passion.
Fast forward, and whilst ME is still a part of who I am, it doesn’t define me. I manage the condition through diet, but realised whilst I was ready to return to a working life, I couldn’t take on the rigours of a normal job. Equally, as a Dad of three (two grown up children, and an active toddler), it was vital I had time to juggle work commitments and family time without compromising my health.
I had to be self-employed, and the only thing I felt passionate about enough to pursue full time was photography.
That is my why for me, becoming a photographer is so personal and has saved my life. When it comes to what I photograph, I tend to focus on commercial shoots, portraits either corporate or personal and product photography, I find these really fulfilling because I get to work with people on a one to one basis (more often than not).
For me, that means I can dedicate more of my time to the needs of my clients. One of the most important things to me is really understanding the brief I’ve been given. I want to get inside my clients head, so I can live and breathe their vision, and help them turn it in to a reality through my input and creative eye. The reality is, you can’t deliver a killer image unless you really feel it. To achieve that, you have to be invested. My whole ethos is to ensure the client is the centrepiece of every job I do, and it’s always about them, not me. It’s this approach that ensures I always exceed expectations, delivering so much more than many would anticipate from a standard photo shoot.
