  • Working pattern/flexible working - We know flexible working is important to you, and it is important to us too. The Partnership has adopted a blended working approach meaning you'll be able to work a mixture between the office and home based upon your personal needs whilst balancing the needs of the business. The Product Design team aim for around 2 days a week in the office to connect, usually a Tuesday and Wednesday and on a more ad-hoc basis to attend key meetings but again, are flexible on this. 

  • Location - This role is based at our Victoria Head Office campus. Please note, any cost incurred as a result of travel to the office is the responsibility of the successful candidate. There is no travel allowance for this role.

About the role:

  •  We are looking to recruit a proactive & creative Designer to join the Cook, Dine, Gift and Seasonal design team at John Lewis. The vacancy is for a 3D product designer, with the ability to design for a diverse range of products; including decorative accessories, gifting and homewares. 

Key responsibilities: 

  • The successful applicant will have a passion for product design, a strength in research, form and excellent product development skills. 

  • They will produce original, commercial and customer-centric design solutions for best in class own brand products.

  • They will take ownership of projects, including product development and sampling process, engaging with relevant stakeholders throughout the process. 

  • They will be an excellent communicator, confident, adaptable and organised so that they are able to flex between multiple projects 

  • This role is a great learning role for a designer who has some industry experience but is looking to develop themselves further in an exciting, fast paced and supportive design studio. 

  • Travel with the team to research and to develop products in the UK, Europe and the Far East is necessary. 

What will you be doing

  • You will take a supporting role in design projects, working independently, alongside or in collaboration with other Designers and the Trading community.

  • Play a critical role in delivering product design that will form a coherent category assortment aligned to brand / sub brand guidelines and in service of our customers. Support the Design Team and studio in fulfilling key tasks across the season.

  • Produce commercial and innovative design solutions to briefs. Develops product design handwriting, displaying a breadth of design handwriting to ensure our customer offer is truly unique.

  • Assists in the research, preparation and presentation of relevant and appropriate category trends. Demonstrate a good level of research and analytical skills to keep abreast of key customer requirements, market trends and conditions, product trends including technological advancements 

  • Ensure the sampling process is efficient. Produces precise design packs. Ensure accurate samples are produced. Maintains comprehensive records of design projects.

Essential skills you’ll need: 

  •  The ability to use Rhino and Adobe packages to an advanced level is required.

  • The Designer will be able to flex their design handwriting and thrive on working on a diverse selection of projects. 

  • Industry experience developing homewares and giftware products is required (e.g. specifying product detail, sampling, liaising with suppliers, etc) 

  • Builds relationships with stakeholders across the design, buying teams and product tech to deliver design objectives. Works effectively with external manufacturing partners

  • Comprehensive commercial awareness of homeware and gifting market is essential.

  • BA degree in Design (product, fashion, furniture, textiles, surface pattern, decorative arts) or relevant experience

  • Relevant industry experience within a design studio
