Quarantine Experience

With the world in a state of lock down, the COVID-19 pandemic has us all wondering what the future will be like and what we all will have to call the new normal.
This project was inspired by how exactly this has an affect on us and how are we going to move forward.

SET UP

The set up for this video is simple. In the background is a hedge. The subject is positioned off center and facing the camera at a slight angle.
During filming we settled for two positions and later decided which of hem was better suited for the video. The two positions were sitting on the top half of a bench with the bench out of frame and standing in an open area with a clear view of the background.
As there was no action (apart from the change in light) happening n the background, this video was shot with as shallow depth of field as possible with the space available at the time.

LIGHTING

The lighting for this video was tricky compared to previous videos. Natural lighting was used as the main light source for this set up. Serving as bot the key and background lights. A combination of small LED lights were used as the fill light to reduce unwanted shadows.
As the sun's position changed so did our lighting and also composition. It is for this reason why filming this video took a total of five hours and over 80 takes.

SOUND

As per usual for this video the subject was wearing a mic and there was also a camera mounted mic as a backup. The major problem faced here was the background noise as this video was shot outdoors and therefore background noise could be controlled less.
We faced interference from builders, neighbors, road, rail and air traffic. This again cause filming to halt several times and contribute to the 80 takes.
No further sounds were needed for this video.

EDITING

When it came to editing this video the process was straight forward as there was only one continuous shot. The process remained the same starting with the syncing of audio, then colour correction, then the effects, creating the teaser, then animations, then sound mixing/design and finally rendering.
The intro animation is something new that will be used for future videos. It was created using After Effects keeping the font and colour scheme of the channel consistent.
As this is the first video with the intro and because when played it worked well, it was decided to extend the background music of the into into the video and through to the end of the video. The main body of the track was looped in order to prevent it from sounding too repetitive.
As per usual the thumbnail was created in Photoshop.

OTHER ASSETS

This was made to be incorporated into the thumbnail but was scrapped.
It was created in Illustrator and the inspiration came from a google search of the word quarantine. The bio hazard symbol was reconstructed from memory.
These four illustrations also created in Illustrator were created to be animated into their respected section of the video but again were scrapped.
