HOW TO SAVE MONEY WHEN HIRING A MAKEUP ARTIST

Whether it's your wedding day, a special occasion, private event or you just want to look and feel beautiful, hiring a makeup artist is easy once you know how. From how to ask for the makeup look you'd like to how much to charge, we've got you covered with a few of key tips on How to Hire a Makeup Artist.

Hire a Makeup Artist UK

1. Know What You Want. A clear description of the look you'd like will make it so much easier for a makeup artist to judge the length of time needed and whether they can do the job or not. In general, keep it simple, use references (the Kim Kardashian smokey eye or Jennifer Lopez glowing skin). A few bits of makeup jargon always helps too. When a makeup artist is given a clear brief and knows that he or she is dealing with a client who has a general understanding of makeup, they will be able to quote an accurate price.

  • Contouring - giving shape to an area of the face and enhancing the facial structure through makeup (a winner if you've got great cheekbones).
  • MUA - stands for Make Up Artist.
  • Nude/Natural Finish - makeup that retains your natural skin tone (a common request for brides).

2. Know Your Maximum Budget. Hiring a makeup artist costs less than you might think. A trial for a wedding job (when a makeup comes to your house before the wedding to trial the looks you'd like) costs around £30 - £50. On the day, you can expect to pay from £60 upwards depending on how many looks you'd like and how many hours the makeup artist is needed for. Mother of the bride and bridesmaids will generally cost more. Some makeup artists charge per person, some per hour and some per day. In general, hiring an aspiring makeup artist will cost from £100 - £200 for a full day and an experienced makeup artist around £250 - £500.

3. Two For One. Many makeup artists also provide hair styling and beauty services. A great way to save when hiring a makeup artist is to combine a few services and purchase a package deal. Many brides will ask the makeup artist to do hair and makeup on her and a select number of bridesmaids then just touchups for the rest of the bridal party. Overload your makeup artist and she may end up rushing or delaying the ceremony.
