Job Description

The Centre for Long-Term Resilience, a leading think tank transforming global resilience to extreme AI and biological risk, is seeking an experienced and talented grant writer to work with us on a contractor basis.

In this role, you will be responsible for planning, writing, and submitting grant proposals to secure funding for our various research initiatives and policy development programs, and creating impact reports and other external communication pieces.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with our Director of Strategic PartnershipsStrategic Partnerships Lead and policy experts to craft compelling, well-written grant proposals for a range of funding sources, including Trusts, Foundations and UNHWIs that effectively communicate our mission, research and policy objectives, and proposed use of funds.
  • Write propositions and pitches that capture CLTR’s work to help raise unrestricted funds for the organisation as a whole and by policy unit.
  • Develop impact reports for awarded grants and donations, and support the creation of the organisation’s annual report.
  • Create impact case study and explainer documents
  • Ensure all grant proposals adhere to specific guidelines, formatting, and submission requirements of each funder, whilst incorporating CLTR’s brand guidelines.
  • Utilise project management skills and processes to manage the grant submission process end-to-end, including mapping out milestones, preparing required documents, forms, and supplemental materials and enabling efficient and collaborative communications and working with policy units.
  • Maintain a detailed calendar and tracking system to monitor grant deadlines, status updates, and award notifications.
  • Collaborate closely with our policy experts, operations and leadership team to gather necessary information and supporting materials for grant submissions.
  • Provide regular progress reports and share completed grant proposals with the organisation’s leadership team and strategy unit.
  • Be available for weekly meetings or check-ins (virtual or in-person) to discuss project status and next steps.
  • Support with wider writing and communications needs on an ad-hoc basis for the external affairs and policy units.
  • Conduct thorough prospect research into the funding opportunity (government agencies, private foundations, HNWIs and other funding sources) to inform proposal and bid development or report writing, ensuring these align with our organisation’s priorities.

Role Requirements

Essential experience, skills and knowledge:

  • 3+ years of proven experience as a strategic writer, preferably in the think tank or policy and research sectors and with a strong understanding of our policy areas (Artificial Intelligence risk, Biosecurity and Risk Management) and knowledge of extreme risks.
  • Clear understanding of the community of funders who are interested in extreme/catastrophic risk (many of whom are connected to the effective altruism space) and our key policy focus areas.
  • Exceptional research, writing, and editing skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Ability to translate and adapt complex, detailed information into relatable and accessible content.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience using project management systems and tools to oversee projects end-to-end.

Desirable experience, skills and knowledge:

  • A broader understanding of trusts and foundations, philanthropic, and institutional donor motivations for giving and the different content and language requirements from different funder audiences.
  • Track record of producing high-quality fundraising proposals, reports and funder communications as a grant writer, which have secured gifts at the 6 and 7-figure level.
  • Familiarity with Asana, Google Drive and Slack systems.
