5 WAYS TO ACE NETWORKING EVENTS AS A FREELANCER

If you’re looking for new clients to ensure 2019 is your best year yet, attending relevant networking events can help you make the connections to make it happen. Voxburner, creators of youth marketing festival YMS London, share their advice on how to make the most of networking opportunities as a freelancer.

  1. Choose the right event for you

Networking events are only valuable if the types of people you’re looking to meet will be present, so it’s worth spending time researching events before you pick one to attend. Ask your industry friends, look at who follows the event organiser on social media, and see who belongs to any associated Facebook or LinkedIn groups.

  1. Invite a friend

Networking events are much less daunting when you’re not on your own. You won’t have to worry about that awkward moment when you don’t have anyone to talk to. Why not bring a friend or business contact who would also find it interesting and useful?

  1. Introduce yourself to the organiser

Not sure if you’ll know anyone when you get to the event? The organiser is usually a friendly face who’s happy to chat, and will know the relevant people in the room that you should be talking to. They want everyone who attends the event to find it fun and fruitful, so don’t be shy in asking them to set you up.

  1. Bring business cards

This might seem obvious, but it’s amazing how many people forget, or underestimate the value of having business cards. Yes, we know everything is digital these days, but a stylish or quirky business card can make you much more memorable. Don’t forget to include your social handles so people have an easy way to keep in touch, even if they don’t have work for you right now.

  1. Focus on quality over quantity

Despite what many people think, networking isn’t just a numbers game. It’s better to meet five valuable contacts, and form a genuine bond with them, rather than 50 people you’ll never speak to again. Remember, as a freelancer, it often only takes one key client to get you on the right track.
