In the bustling creative landscape of London, thousands of individuals aspire to turn their passion into a legitimate career. Although the act of registering a business, creating an online presence, and landing a couple of early-stage clients may be relatively achievable, becoming financially sustainable doing something you love is far more challenging. One such individual currently on this journey is Michael Naylor, a talented photographer who has been working in photography for 5 years, assisting and developing his craft, who is now carving a niche for himself in the world of cinematic portrait photography.

We met up with Michael to learn about his story. He graduated during the pandemic when work was sparse. In addition to the traditional challenges faced by freelancers, Michael had to find solutions to the unique problem of being a creative freelancer in lockdown.

Michael is one of a select number of creatives taking part in the Rise, Freelancer programme, supported by Xero. The cloud-based accounting platform has joined forces with Freelancer Club and the University of Westminster, known for its legacy of fostering creative talent, in nurturing the next generation of freelance talent. Together, we aim to impact the journeys of budding freelancers, enhancing their prospects of success and providing a beacon of inspiration for the wider community.

The programme is helping Michael establish a framework for his photography business and provide him with more structure. Undoubtedly talented, Michael's challenge is

What sets Michael's work apart is his innate ability to capture the essence of his subjects. Each photograph tells a story, drawing viewers into a world where emotions are palpable, and narratives unfold in cinematic splendour. His keen eye for detail and masterful play with light and shadow create portraits that are nothing short of breathtaking.

London, with its rich tapestry of cultures and personalities, serves as the perfect backdrop for Michael's artistry. The city's energy and diversity infuse his work with a unique vibrancy, adding an extra layer of depth to each photograph. Michael's work is a refreshing testament to the power of authentic storytelling through imagery.

As Michael continues to forge his path in the world of freelance artistry, one thing is abundantly clear: his journey is an inspiration to budding creatives and established professionals alike. His story reminds us all that with talent, determination, and a supportive community, even the loftiest of aspirations can be turned into reality.

We're exciting to go on this journey with Michael over the coming months and discover where it takes him.
