Halloween is just around the corner and it's a very busy time particularly for a Halloween makeup artist. The challenge is how to maximise this seasonal opportunity when you only have one or two days to do everything. Here are our top 4 tips for the hard working Halloween makeup.
GET THE PREP DONE BEFORE THE DAY
Not all Halloween makeup artist work comes on the day but most of it does so it's vital that as a Halloween makeup artist you're able to focus on as many faces as possible during this short period of time. If you're lucky to have booked a few clients throughout the day, try to line them up so you're not spending time travelling too far. Make sure you've confirmed your client's time and the look they'd like so you can prep your Halloween makeup kit well in advance. It's important to be strict with your time too so be pleasant but efficient. A typical Halloween makeup artist has to hit and run.
ECONOMY OF SCALE
When you book in a Halloween makeup job, ask if there are others who would like your services at the same time. Kids are particularly good for this and generally will have a group who'd like their face painted for Halloween. By working on a group you can offer a discount and maximise your time. It also costs less for the bank of mum and dad so everyone's a winner.
MORE THAN JUST HALLOWEEN
Although Halloween falls once every October, the work you do can be used as marketing for Halloween night and throughout the year. Take photos of your Halloween makeup work (always ask permission of the client first) and start to build a portfolio of the work from the day. It may not seem like a good use of your time when you're flat out but by promoting your Halloween makeup live and throughout the year, you'll be able to pick up more jobs for private parties, face painting jobs, theatre and film. You are also compiling lots of strong content in one day that your social followers will love to see.
Bonus tip: make sure every client receives a business card or flyer so they can come back to you next time. Mention any other services you offer other than face painting and try to pick up a few new clients for bridal or private makeup work.
GET CREATIVE
For a Halloween makeup artist, Halloween night is such a great opportunity to flex your creative muscles. The work you do will be seen by loads of people online and offline so go the extra mile. Whether you're working on kids or adults, try to give them a look that they could never do themselves and you'll be talked about for weeks after.
