LOCKDOWN RESTRICTIONS EASED FOR BEAUTY INDUSTRY - WHO CAN REOPEN FOR BUSINESS?

From Monday July 13th, beauty salons, tattoo studios, nail bars, massage studios, spas and tanning salons can reopen for business. Appropriate PPE and other restrictions will be required to ensure safety, and the decision may be reversed if there are local spikes in coronavirus cases.

For many, this news comes as a huge relief. However, this announcement has also stirred confusion and disappointment for other beauty businesses, whose services remain banned.

According to the BBC, the following treatments are still prohibited:

  • Makeup application

  • Eyebrow treatments

  • Face waxing, sugaring or threading services

  • Facial treatments

  • Advanced facial technical (electrical or mechanical)

  • Dermarolling

  • Dermaplaning

  • Microblading

  • Electrolysis on the face

As stated by government guidelines, these services pose the highest risk, as they involve the most close-contact with the area in front of the face.

Whilst of course the public’s safety is the top priority, the decision still leaves many businesses on the brink of collapse. This is especially frustrating for facial-based services for whom using PPE is a viable option.
