CERYS MURRAY; THE REALITIES OF FREELANCE LIFE @ UNIVERSITY

In a candid conversation, our Founder, Matt Dowling, sat down with the erudite Cerys Jayne Murray, a scholarly Master's student at the University of Nottingham, who simultaneously assumes the roles of a part-time barista and a freelance content creator. Together, they delved into the intricate realms of university support, or rather the lack thereof, that confronts ambitious freelancers like Cerys. They also discussed the delicate balance between work, life, and education that she valiantly strives to maintain, the challenge faced by students when asking to be paid for their services, and the profound psychological hurdles plaguing students, including imposter syndrome, inhibiting them from confidently valuing the worth of their skills.

JUMPING INTO THE DEEP END WITHOUT A LIFEJACKET

Notice the word I use in the title?  I don’t say thrown into the deep end. I say jump. That implies it’s done voluntarily. It’s done with ownership and accountability.  Once you make that leap and enter the water — you have zero excuses. You are either a victim or victor to your own ego.  Nobody threw me in against my will. I threw myself in. I may have well ignored all the advice, all the warning signs…as I know I’m a good swimmer

GUESS WHAT, FREELANCERS? IT'S OKAY TO BE VULNERABLE

Hey there mi familia, how the hell are ya? It’s been a while.  Just shy of 2 months ago…I was in a pretty different mindset and this last Freelancer Club piece came pouring out of me.  I was pissed, I was done, I was over it. I had an axe to grind with the bullsh*t us highly-skilled, hardworking freelancers deal with on a daily basis from the snobbery in society that looks down upon us from its ivory-tower. Like a loyal boxing coach, I stood proudly by the freelancer’s corner for yet another fight.  Actually, oh contraire…I put the gloves on and entered the ring myself. This was my fight, and I felt indomitable.

HOW DATING APPS CAN HELP LAND FREELANCE JOBS

I jumped on the Tinder bandwagon a while back. Albeit a bit reluctantly, I should add.  As someone who had the phrase ‘don’t talk to strangers’ drilled into me from the time I could talk, the idea of dating strangers I’d met online seemed a bit dodgy. So, I put off downloading the app for ages.

ACT LIKE A LONE WOLF, NOT PART OF THE PACK

Hey, you.  And when I say ‘you’ — I mean it in the way of greeting you as a lone wolf who has arrived at the party solo. I do not intend to lump you in with the rest of the crowd.  I mean, let's be honest here — we’re freelancers for goodness sakes.  We always roll solo.

CALCULATE YOUR HOURLY BOTTOM LINE

What you are worth and your bottom line are two very different things. The main difference is that the former relates to your value while the latter is a calculation to determine what you need to charge in order to sustain your current standard of living or 'break-even' point. The beauty of this little bottom line formula is that you can adjust it to find out what your freelance hourly rate should be to achieve the life you'd like to live. Remember, know what you are worth, then ask for it!
